George Kopf has opened the door to his German immigrant family dating back to the mid-nineteeth century and allows the reader to understand the motivations behind their immigration and all of the opportunity that the Midwestern United States (Toledo, Ohio) made available to them. Most of the family memoir is set in the twentieth century as it traces the Kopf family's transition into the middle and upper-middle class while telling enjoyable stories of his great grandfather, grandfather, father and eventually George himself and his career in the American Foriegn service. Throughout the book is George's search for his Grandmother's, Almeda's, roots as well as her advice and counsel in matters of life, intimacy,business, and ambition. Kopf writes with an easy somewhat journalistic style that never gets bogged down in deep family emotions and secrets, but rather sticks to the facts and accomplishments of a truly interesting American family. I found myself relating directly to many of his experiences and those of his ancestors. In the end its all about the opportunities that so many of us have found in the United States through the twentieth century. It leaves the door open to the reader to wonder what might lie ahead for all of us.Product details
