Delphi Complete Works of Anthony Trollope Illustrated eBook Anthony Trollope

I can endure the lack of indention, proper punctuation, and difficult navigation (basically impossible) in this large collection of Trollope's writing, BUT it's unacceptable the number of occasions that I move to the next page and the text is missing. I've landed somewhere nearby, but definitely NOT in the sentence I was in. It's impossible to truly know how much I've missed--a few sentences or paragraphs? An entire page? I could overlook this if it only happened once or twice, but it happens ALL THE TIME. It's infuriating to have to wonder whether you're going to turn the page and remain in the same sentence....or be randomly jolted somewhere farther into the narrative that may or may not be related to what you were reading on the previous page! SO ANNOYING! Don't bother with this version by Delphi. I'm going to take a chance on the $4 collection by a different publisher that includes more of Trollope's writings. It's fairly important to feel confident that you're going to remain in the same sentence from one page to the next.

Delphi Complete Works of Anthony Trollope Illustrated eBook Anthony Trollope Reviews

Society changed so much after WW2 that it may be difficult for younger readers to come to terms with the old ideas of what was acceptable and what was not in the nineteenth century. It seems daft to us now that an Earls son or daughter could not marry whomsoever they pleased but in then it was a major issue. It is necessary therefore, to put aside twenty first century ideas and just accept the books and social structure in the spirit of the nineteenth century. Then you will hugely enjoy the books.
This e-book is fairly easy to navigate, has extremely few typos, and includes contemporary illustrations, but its best feature is that it provides a lot of Trollope for very little money. And, as I've been discovering after finishing the fifth novel in the Barchester series, that's a very good thing. Accessible and surprisingly modern, Trollope is one of those rare writers you can't believe you spent most of your life without. This one volume will keep me busy and highly entertained for a long time to come what a luxury!
I keep trying to read other things and end up getting sucked back into Trollope. My favorite series is the Barchester Chronicles. Be warned, though, the books aren't in series order so you'll have to do some research to find what order they go in
Hard to believe virtually all of Trollope's output in one inexpensive package! Navigation is intuitive, and there are very few typos. I have read a number of Trollope novels and stories in the distant past, and I am now enjoying embarking on those I haven't yet encountered in this compact form. Now what am I going to do about the 30 or so fat Trollope books taking up space, many of which I haven't yet read? I know. I'll go back and forth between paper and electronic, just for the fun of it (and convenience when I'm out and about, of course). Why did I buy all those books so long ago? Oh, yes - they were being reissued at a bargain price, and - most important, as I am rediscovering - Trollope is addictive!
Having read the Barsetshire series, I believe Framley Parsonage is the best. There is always a story line of boy meets girl, boy wants girl, boy gets girl, etc. Aside from that predictable thread, other stories that are interwoven are interesting and give a detailed look at life in mid-19th century -- the upper class -- both rich and embarrassed -- and the working class. What made Framley Parsonage stand out is the development of all the characters, especially the heroine Lucy. You can't help but root for her and all those around her. All the characters seem very real and Trollope's ability to represent the feelings and thoughts of the women seems very perceptive. I confess to have read FP over a dozen times!
This is the full body of the prolific Trollope's work -- more than 40 novels. The edition is badly copy-edited but serviceable. He is the genial, mostly hopeful, ironic and lightly comedic English novelist I enjoy most for his solid portrayals of mid-century to late-century England and Ireland. THE WAY WE LIVE NOW, however, is a truly great and far-seeing book about how the romance of capitalism and monetary adventurism can bugger up a heretofore relatively caring society. Its antihero is an early version of Bernie Madoff, and the gullible abound. I am not alone in finding THE WARDEN and BARCHESTER TOWERS his other great works-- he knows English clericalism and country parishes intimately. Trollope himself loved to ride to hounds, and his portrayal of hunting and field sports is consequently beautiful and loving. Henry James and others put Trollope right up there with Thackeray, Dickens, and George Eliot as top writers of the period. Though he is less bitingly satirical than Thackeray, less dark and metaphorical than Dickens, and less profound than Eliot -- Trollope is a writer you'll want to dip in and out of for years.
Great collection of Trollope works that I downloaded to Fire. They have been scanned in properly and one does not encounter many spelling errors like in some other e-books. Have read several of the Palliser & Barsetshire novels. The few illustrations especially the one of the author are delights. The collection is a treasure trove to be enjoyed over time.

I can think of only one negative for downloading a collection rather than an individual book. One does not know where one is in the book being read. The location indicator at the bottom of the screen might show 10% but it relates to the whole collection and one could be almost at the end of the book being read. It is also important to set frequent book marks since it is impossible to find the exact location in the large collection if one navigates away for some reason (like pressing the wrong button).
